So in the beginning of June I went from being a full-time freelance content marketing consultant to devoting nearly 100% of my time to working on my own tech and media journalism. I’ll write more about how I plan to monetize that journalism in July (no, it’s not through advertising), but I wanted to start what will hopefully be a monthly series cataloguing my monthly content reach. Perhaps once I launch the monetization side of my business I’ll provide updates on progress there.
So here are the numbers:
Views on my longform articles and blog posts
I published five longform articles across my website, Medium, and LinkedIn. I also published several shorter posts to Medium. In total, these got 14,575 views.
This is a good start for my first month but I’m going to need to increase my article reach significantly in the next six months. This is one area where I hope to see a lot of month to month growth.
I regularly post both short and longform content across my Facebook page, LinkedIn, Twitter, Medium, my weekly newsletter, and (just recently) YouTube. Over the past month, my subscribers across all these platforms grew by 4,390. All this follower growth was organic with no cheap gimmicks to juice my follower count. This brings my platform following/subscriptions to 38,883.

This is definitely tremendous growth that I’m happy with, though I am disappointed in my newsletter subscription growth. I added 59 subscribers, which is still much lower than where I need to be, but then when you also account for my unsubscribes I only netted six new followers. This is an area where I hope to see more drastic growth in the coming months — my list was somewhat dormant for over a year with new updates only coming once every few months, so I think it was bound to get quite a few unsubscribes since there were likely plenty of people who forgot why they subscribed in the first place.
Total impressions across all channels
When you add up the total impressions my posts got — both longform articles and social media updates — across all the above channels, my online brand received 937,881.
That’s kind of cool to stop and think about for a second — that a single guy on the internet without any institutional backing produced content that was seen nearly a million times. Of course, a lot of those impressions were on shortform social media posts. It’ll be a lot more impressive when my longform articles make up a larger piece of that pie.
Anyway, that’s all I have for this month. Let’s hope for continued growth!
