Just because a media company contracts work from a freelancer, does that mean it therefore owns all the IP associated with that work?

Editor’s note: Hi there Medium readers! I’m Simon Owens and I’m a journalist who writes about the media industry and Creator Economy. Below is my weekly roundup of links to industry news. Enjoy!

  1. Should journalists own 100% of their content IP? [Poynter]

I’m talking to more and more content creators who bristle at the idea that just because a media company contracted work from them, that it therefore owns all the IP associated with that work. In fact, I have an upcoming podcast interview with a famous writer whose motivation for going to Substack was because he could own 100% of his IP.

2. The biggest mistakes paid newsletters make [Simon Owens]

It’s incredibly difficult for a newsletter writer to pry away a reader’s credit card information, and most readers are inundated with way too much content already.

3. Legacy newspapers keep eliminating print editions [WashPo]

To be honest, I find it kind of strange that print newspapers still exist considering that I don’t know a single person my age or younger who reads print versions with any regularity.
