What I did to fight Trumpism this week

Every Friday I fight Trumpism. I start by donating to a cause that advocates for good. I then contact government representatives to urge them to either oppose or support policies I consider important.

For my donation this week, I gave to the Natural Resources Defense Council. Trump has called climate change a Chinese “hoax” and vowed to back out of the Paris Agreement. The NRDC is an environmental advocacy organization that will work to halt Trump’s climate denialist policies. You can donate here.

I also wrote to Congressmen and called on them to oppose the nomination of Jeff Sessions for Attorney General. Here’s the message I wrote to Senator Chuck Grassley, the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee. Notice the threat I’m adding to the end of my correspondence:

Dear Senator Grassley,

I’m writing to urge you to oppose the nomination of Jeff Sessions as Attorney General. Sessions has a long history of racially-charged remarks. Given the ongoing controversies relating to police shootings of unarmed people of color and the rise of restrictive voting laws that disenfranchise minority voters, Sessions is the last person we should have overseeing our law enforcement apparatus.

If you do fail to oppose Sessions, I pledge to donate to your opponents during your next election race.

Thank you for your consideration,

Simon Owens

Want to help fight Trumpism too?

Here are the steps you can follow:

  1. Pick a day of the week as your Fight Trumpism Day. That way, you always have a day set aside so you have no excuses to put it off. At most you’ll need to devote an hour a week to fighting Trumpism. My day is Friday.
